Gandhi Memorials

We spent the day at the Rajghat (where Gandhi was cremated) and at Gandhi Smriti (where he lived for awhile and where he was assassinated).  Gandhi was a great man!

The Fam at India Gate

As a reminder, India Gate is a memorial to the Indian and British soldiers who died during WWI.

A Government Building

The Fam on Rajpath

That's India Gate was in the background. We were facing the President's house. If you have been following International news, you'll know that last week India elected it's very first woman president!

The Parliament Building

It's a cool round building

The Guard under India Gate

I must have forgotten since September, but this is similar to the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington National Cemetery. There are flames in each of the four circular things on top.

The Tomb

Kids cooling off

It was really hot and humid today. We were all sweating in places we didn't realize we could sweat.

Please Mom!

All the kids were begging to play with the monkeys, but there is NO WAY I'm paying someone to give my kids rabies. Sorry kids!

One is born every minute...

This woman was really brave (or mentally challenged) and had this cobra around her neck. Yikes!

Rajghat

This is where Gandhi was cremated. It is considered very sacred ground. People were paying homage to him with flowers and prayer. Shoes were removed at the site itself.

Tourists visiting Rajghat

The umbrellas are a really good idea for beating the heat, and it was fun to see so many of the same in a single file line.

A private moment

This couple was cooling off under this beautiful tree on the Rajghat grounds

Our fam at Rajghat

The table in the background is where Gandhi was cremated. Do we look hot enough yet?

Selling flowers...

This woman was selling flowers you could use to pay respect to Gandhi at the site.

Gandhi Smriti

This was another site we visited. This is where Gandhi lived for the last 144 days of his life and where he was assasinated.

A great quote...

Straight and narrow...

where have I heard that before?

Making homespun

Gandhi, an Oxford educated lawyer, renounced worldiness and lived a very simple life teaching non-violence

Gandhi's last footsteps

The final steps

Under the pavilion is where he was shot by Nathuram Godse, a Hindu Extremist.

A quote about Gandhi...

by Rabindranath Tagore

Fear of Death?

Another great quote

World Peace Gong

I really wanted to ring it...

Nice guys!

They were nice to let the ladies have the A/C car while they rode in the super hot taxi!
