Peggy Visit 2007

November 25, 2007 - December 8, 2007 - We had a fantastic time, although, as usual, it went by too fast.  We did a lot of shopping, saw the Qtub Minar, took the Metro to Old Delhi, and saw the Taj Mahal.

Mom at Alai Minar

This tower was supposed to be twice at tall as the Qtub Minar, but obviously wasn't completed.

Pillars...

Photo opportunity...

these girls pretty much lined up to get individual photos with Mom and I. We got one group shot... I should have said "make picture... 10 rupees!" I could have made like $10.

Detail on the tower

We took the Delhi Metro...

to Old Delhi. The Metro was sparkling clean... seriously. Look how it's totally open the entire length.

Old Delhi Intersection

"Oh, what a tangled web we weave"

Looking down the street...

from the Jama Masjid -- the largest active mosque in India. We ate lunch on that street.

Looking down on the courtyard

This mosque can accomodate 20,000 for prayers. This pic was taken on our "hike" up the tower.

We climbed the tower...

it's really tall, and you need to have a man in your party or you can't go up. It was a dark and creepy climb, but totally worth it for the amazing view.

Learning to beg...

Her father (I assume) was teaching her to turn her hand over and approach all the white people. (no comment)

Lunch at Karems...

Wow! It was fabulous!

Goats with coats...

Stacks and stacks...

of wrapping paper. We were on the "paper" street. Just about every kind and function of paper you could imagine (except TP) was on this street.

Feliz Navidad!

Even in India

A book shop

... I'm certain the shopkeeper knew exactly where every book was.

HAY!

A sari shop

A school bus?

Looks more like a paddy wagon to me...

Where would you even put this?

The catchy phrase at the bottom says:

Classic moments in India

Mild panic...

We put Mom in a rickshaw to the Metro station and he just took off. She was a little concerned.

Ever seen Amazing Race?

We were all encouraging our rickshaw drivers to go "jaldee, jaldee" and pass the others. Kelly's driver was using other methods to win.

Almost there...

Outside the Metro station

20 years from now this kid is going to say "Mom, what was I wearing?"

"Killer blueline" Pilot

These private busses have been responsible for more than a hundred deaths in senseless accidents this year.

Taj Repair work

What has happened to craftsmanship? It's here in India. These guys were carving a replacement piece for the gate building. It was beautiful.
